Gun Storage

The rate of gun thefts from cars has soared over the past ten years. On average, at least one gun is stolen from a car every nine minutes in the United States. Often, these stolen guns are used in other crimes in our communities. In another shift over the past decade, most stolen guns are taken from cars parked at home—whether in driveways, outside houses, or on the street.

When guns aren’t stored securely, tragedy can strike—whether it’s a child finding a firearm and injuring or killing themselves or someone else, someone stealing it and using it to commit a crime, or countless other heartbreaking situations.

As part of our continued work to inform the public about secure gun storage, it’s imperative we educate folks about the risks stolen guns can pose to our loved ones and neighbors, and how securely storing guns in cars is a simple step we can all take to protect our personal property and prevent crime.
