Our Process
Three Steps to Become a Be SMART Partner
Getting started is straightforward. Reach out, sign a licensing agreement, and begin sharing co-branded materials in your community.

Inquiry Email besmart@everytown.org with the subject line “Partnership inquiry,” or use our contact form if you prefer.

Licensing agreement Sign a non-exclusive, revocable agreement to use Be SMART marks and materials. This is a two-step process initiated through an online form.

Co-branding Apply your own logo to existing Be SMART designs. Partners cover the cost of printing co-branded materials.

How much does it cost to become a Be SMART partner?
It is completely free to become a Be SMART partner! We work with organizational partners at the local, regional, and national levels to promote responsible gun ownership and safety practices
Partners are responsible for the costs associated with printing and distributing materials in person or online.
What is the time commitment to be a partner?
There is no minimum time commitment to be a Be SMART partner. When you partner with Be SMART, you become a trusted ambassador of our message. You know your community best, and we’re here to support you in reaching people about the importance of secure gun storage in whatever ways best fit your setting(s).
Official Be SMART partners receive licensing to co-brand and distribute materials; messaging guidance on preventing child gun deaths and promoting safety in your community; no-cost access to preview a gun safety training program; and more.
Who else is an official Be SMART partner?
Be SMART is grateful to the over 70 official partners who are working to spread the life-saving message of secure gun storage at the local, regional, and national levels. Partners range from local YMCA branches to police departments to the Presbyterian Church (USA).

How do Be SMART partners in different sectors actually use your resources?
The beauty of Be SMART is that it provides a framework that all adults in all communities can follow to normalize conversations about gun safety. Some of the ways different sectors have leveraged Be SMART resources include:
- Medical Partners: Integrate Be SMART into parent education, post materials in waiting rooms, or use sample language in Electronic Health Records like Epic.
- Law Enforcement & Municipalities: Distribute materials alongside gun permits or licenses and train officers in the Be SMART framework.
- Corporate Partners: Offer Be SMART trainings to employees or distribute information through internal newsletters.
- Educational Partners: Share resources in newsletters, adopt the program for school-wide awareness, and pass secure storage resolutions.

Do you have gun locks that Be SMART partners can give away?
Be SMART has a limited number of gun locks available for partners; Be SMART partners often connect with local chapters of Moms Demand Action to give away gun locks.
Additionally, cable locks are often included with the purchase of firearms, and many secure storage options can be purchased from gun shops, sporting goods stores, or online retailers. Reach out to your local police department or department of public health for additional secure storage options, or check at your local library.
My community would really benefit from stronger firearm safety training. Where can I go to learn more?
We understand that there are many gun safety training programs available in today’s market. Be SMART official partners have opportunities to partner with Train SMART, a firearm training program for current and prospective gun owners.
What to know about Train SMART:
- Created by military veterans, it applies proven military principles of training, safety, and responsibility to the civilian market.
- Course offerings include:
- A basic course on essential pre-purchase information.
- Two courses for first-time owners that cover marksmanship, safe ownership/operation in various settings, self-protection, teaching children safety, and avoiding dangerous situations.
