Our Purpose
When Our Children are Safe, Our Community is Safe
The Be SMART campaign, a program of the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, launched in 2015 to reduce the deaths, injuries, and trauma that result when a child or teen gains unintentional access to a gun.
What began as a simple message about gun safety has grown into a powerful, community-driven movement for secure gun storage, with thousands of Be SMART volunteers across the country.
Our Focus
It is an Adult’s Responsibility to Keep Children Safe
A curious, impulsive, or determined child or teen could find and handle an unsecured gun — even if they’ve been told not to. That’s why every gun owner is responsible for finding a secure storage solution for their home, and every adult is responsible for normalizing conversations about secure storage.
Together, we are committed to keeping kids safe from finding a firearm and injuring or killing themselves (intentionally or unintentionally) and to protecting our communities from the devastating consequences of unsecured guns being stolen.
The Be SMART Framework
What Does it Mean to Be SMART
Be SMART is a framework that everyone — gun owners and non gun owners alike — can follow to prevent gun violence. Parents, caretakers, community members, and professionals can learn these simples steps to keep kids and communities safe:
